My Cirdan Placement Experience: Jing Sun, Placement UX Specialist

Jing Sun joined Cirdan as part of our 2023-2024 student intake. During her placement year, Jing has been involved in many projects as part of our UX team, particularly focusing on the development of our Laboratory Information System, ULTRA; from creating prototypes for brand new features, to designing and developing our style guides!

We caught up with Jing to find out more about her placement experience within Cirdan, what she has enjoyed about her role, and what she will bring from her experience as she transitions back to university life.

What did your job role involve at Cirdan?

My role in Cirdan has been varied in my year here. Currently, I’m focusing on the feature set available in our LIS, ULTRA. My main task has been to design new mock-ups and prototypes for ULTRA’s features. I do this by reading user stories and comparing designs against multiple criteria to make sure that the final product fulfils the needs of our global users. But this is just one facet of my work at Cirdan!

I have also been involved in other tasks for ULTRA, including designing and making icons and helping develop ULTRA’s style guide. I also love the collaborative nature of UX work and really enjoy helping other team members with any design related queries, suggestions and feedback.

What are some of your most memorable moments from working at Cirdan?

I remember feeling very welcomed when I first started at Cirdan! I received lots of support from everyone straight away, which helped me settle into my role. There is a great sense of collaboration in the teams that I work in, and across the company.

One of my favourite moments has been attending a Community of Practice session, where a new ULTRA feature was shown to a group of Cirdan customers. It was amazing to hear feedback from real life clients on something that I had a part in working on, and seeing how our designs became functional in ULTRA, ultimately helping improve the daily work carried out in labs around the world.

What are your plans for when you go back to university?

My placement year at Cirdan has taught me a lot. It has truly consolidated how much I love working in the field of UX! I have gained a whole set of new skills whilst building on my existing ones, which will no doubt be transferable to projects in my final year and beyond. I can go back to university feeling extra confident that UX is a role that I want to continue to work in after graduation.
