New Heights in Healthcare Innovation: Rui Guo Presents Paper at the Association of Computational Linguistics’ BioNLP 2024

Cirdan are delighted to announce that our colleague, KTP Associate Rui Guo, together with Queen’s University Belfast and Cirdan, has submitted a research paper which has been accepted and is on display at the Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics’ BioNLP workshop 2024!

Cirdan are a leading global provider of informatics and imaging solutions that enhance and speed up patient diagnosis. Cirdan undertook a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Queen’s University Belfast this year for the second time, working in collaboration with Dr Barry Devereux and Dr Niall McLaughlin, from the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Rui’s project focuses on using AI as part of the patient diagnosis journey; generating sessions in discharge letters to reduce the paperwork burden on medical staff.

The project saw Rui employ Large Language Models (LLMs) and develop methods using Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to generate a patient’s discharge letter by learning from similar patients’ results. The LLM then follows a carefully curated template to produce the final output. This work lays the foundation for applying LLMs to lab test report generation, which is the goal of the KTP project. This task also aligns with Cirdan’s mission to enhance patient care by leveraging the latest digital technologies to improve the speed and accuracy of diagnoses.

We are thrilled that Rui is representing both Cirdan and QUB at the BioNLP workshop in Bangkok, Thailand, where he is exhibiting his paper and discussing his research this week. He has already received some fantastic feedback and comments on his research, and how it truly holds the power to streamline workflows in a critical moment of each patient’s journey.

Commenting on the success of having his research paper accepted for the BioNLP, Rui said: ‘Participating in the “Discharge Me” challenge at BioNLP 2024 was my first experience working with electronic healthcare record (EHR) data. The challenge motivated me to put forth my best efforts. Integrating the latest AI developments into this project was incredibly exciting, and the trial-and-error process over those two months provided me with many memorable moments!’.

Dr Niall McLaughlin, Lecturer and KTP supervisor at QUB, added: ‘We are immensely proud to see Rui’s research showcased at the BioNLP workshop as part of the ACL Conference. This achievement not only highlights the strength of the collaboration between Cirdan and Queen’s University Belfast but also shows the potential impact of this research in advancing AI applications in healthcare. We are excited about the future possibilities it holds’.

At Cirdan, we are truly passionate about improving patient wellbeing through innovation. Undertaking projects focusing on digital health technology is one method of assisting clinicians in expediting patient diagnosis. Rui’s project, alongside QUB and Cirdan, has demonstrated real benefits for patients and clinicians, which will be a true testament to the fantastic work achieved from our partnership.

Congratulations on the acceptance of your paper, Rui! We are delighted to see our KTP collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast strengthen year on year, and reach new heights in healthcare innovation.
